West Portal Bungalow Project

The inspiration for the design of our West Portal Bungalow project sprung from the original details still present in this light-filled single family residence on a peaceful quiet block in San Francisco.

The family of five adored the home’s vintage charm, but needed more space and an up-to-date kitchen for the rigors of modern day living. The owners wanted their renovated home to feel warm and welcoming. They wanted to honor its history, while thoughtfully updating it for the modern era.

We worked with CMD Architecture to bring this renovation to life, refining the layout and cabinetry, as well as sourcing the perfect materials for a 1930s-inspired kitchen.

We designed a custom rift cut white oak built-in kitchen banquette for additional storage and a family breakfast nook. The bespoke arched valences for the window and vent hood we designed mirror the arches we continued through the main areas of the home. As our clients said, these custom touches made their home truly feel like “a work of art.”

The foyer, living and dining room design carried the story from entry to the heart of the home for a bright, colorful and charming space.

We loved working with the children to design their new bedroom in colorful plaid and navy blue. In the primary bedroom, the luxurious lighting and deep colors make for a peaceful and elegant oasis.

We were so honored to renovate this wonderful family home for our clients to cherish forever.

From the client

“We first hired The Modern Vic to redesign our original 1930s kitchen. It had charming details but was hard to cook in and was not a functional space for our family of five. I never imagined our finished kitchen would make our whole family as happy as it has.

Sarah and her team got to work right away, reviewing our construction plans. Sarah made some incredibly thoughtful and creative suggestions to help us make the most of our space. Thanks to her vision, we added a custom eat-in area that is now the hub of our home.

Sarah listened to our hopes for the space and picked out unique and historically appropriate details that elevated our kitchen from a work space to a room we love spending time in.

We loved The Modern Vic’s work so much that we hired the team to redesign our entire main living floor. Again, Sarah added details we never would have thought of on our own, like archways between rooms.

People visiting our renovated home tell us how good it feels to be in it - Sarah and her team know not only what looks good but what will feel inviting and homey. Sarah is also a team player, working seamlessly with our architects so everyone could do their best work and deliver a fantastic final product.

Finally, I never felt any pressure to take on a design aesthetic that wasn’t ours or stretch uncomfortably beyond our budget. The Modern Vic was 100% there for us, thought creatively to invest in areas where it mattered most, and always followed through (and usually ahead of schedule). We can’t recommend Sarah and her team enough and will be hiring The Modern Vic for another round of work as soon as we have our plans together!”
