Oakland Craftsman Bathroom
Our clients loved the classic details of their Oakland Craftsman home, as well as bold color and strong patterns. With this in mind, we designed a bathroom to coordinate with the original details of the home in their newly renovated space.
For this couple without young children, we reconfigured their shower-over-tub to a beautiful walk-in shower with arched entry for drama and to reflect their home’s historic charm.
The bespoke vanity made of richly stained Alder gave them more storage without eating up precious floor space in the small room. The rich wood tone echoes the original paneling in the main living spaces in the home, with a style befitting an original Oakland Craftsman.
The custom mosaic floor served as the foundation for our design, a pattern of 1” square tiles in three stunning colors. A classic tile wainscoting that envelops the room in lush greens and ivory highlighted the elegant archway to the shower. A modified checkerboard wall and ceiling in the shower stall creates an enliving and cozy feeling, with bright brass fixtures for a luxurious vibe.
Our clients told us, “we love everything about our new bathroom!” We do too!

From the client
“We were excited to work with Sarah and the team at The Modern Vic for our bathroom renovation. This was our first interior project, and we didn’t know what to expect. At our first meeting, Sarah asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully, and got a feel for our overall aesthetic.
Sarah heard our desire to honor and maintain the character of our 100-year-old home and gave us design options that were both beautiful and highly functional. The attention to detail in the design and execution was really impressive. In addition to being a talented designer, Sarah is also an excellent project manager. She communicated clearly at each stage and kept the timeline moving. Her oversight was invaluable to us as first-time renovators.
We are delighted with our new bathroom and honestly can’t even pick a favorite thing because we love everything about it!”
