Design Tip: Which Stone Is Right for You?

Choosing the right materials for your home renovation can be daunting. There are so many materials out there, it’s hard to know where to begin!

One of the most important pieces of these key spaces is the countertop–and we are huge fans of natural stone. Nothing can compare to the movement and variation inherent in natural stone. Here are a few varieties you might consider.

Quartzite: Not to be confused with the synthetic quartz countertop that has gained popularity in recent years, quartzite is a natural stone formed deep underground when quartz-rich sandstone is subjected to intense heat and pressure. The result is a very durable and beautiful stone, with a rainbow of color options and crystalline beauty.

In our 1919 Avenues project, we used a gorgeous Mont Blanc quartzite to complement the warm woods, brilliant brass, and green tile.

Granite: Many of our clients have outdated visions of granite countertops, which were all the rage in the 90s. But this versatile and durable stone can be gorgeous in the proper context. Leathered black granite was a beautiful choice in our Maison Marigny project, where the antiqued surface on the wet bar was the perfect pairing with the glazed brick backsplash and weathered, original cypress wood throughout the home. More importantly, this stone could withstand the acidic lemon juice splatters from frequent cocktail mixing!

Marble: Although many of our clients fear that marble will be too difficult to maintain, with a few tips, it could be the right countertop for you! Marble can etch in contact with acids (think vinegar and lemon juice) and it is a softer stone. That said, with regular sealing and a watchful eye, marble is a beautiful choice in both kitchens and bathrooms, aging gracefully with the beautiful patina that evolves with time.
